Meet the team

Gillian Norman

Hi, I’m Gillian and I started at Crossways in September 2003 working weekends, and when I finished school in 2005 I became full-time. I was part of Crossways whilst the hydrotherapy centre was being developed and completed a City and Guilds level 1 and 2 in Small Animal Hydrotherapy.  The hydrotherapy industry has changed a lot since then, and I have completed further training in line with this, achieving my level 3 ABC award in 2013.I have spent many years caring for several generations of family pets in the kennels, cattery and hydrotherapy pool.

I have 1 cheeky terrier and 3 springer spaniels at home along with rabbits and guinea pigs.  I like to spend lots of time with my dogs doing agility, hoopers, scentwork and trick training.

Suzi Flynn

Hi, my name is Suzi.  I’ve worked at Crossways for 16 years, I started as a weekender in 2003 but have been full time for the last 7 years.  I attended Merrist Wood Agricultural College for 4 years where I completed a National Diploma and Foundation Degree in Animal Management. I’ve been a level 3 qualified Hydrotherapist for 9 years, completing courses in animal first aid, anatomy and physiology.

My days at Crossways are made up of duties in the kennels, cattery and hydrotherapy pool.  I own a collie called Belle and a Golden Retriever called Omlette (silly name to match her silly nature).

Over the years I have owned 6 rescue dogs from different rescue centres such as Battersea dogs home and PNH in Ireland.  I feel very lucky to have this job and love spending my days with the animals and the Crossways team.  I’m currently expecting my first baby who I hope in years to come will be a weekender here too.

Molly Silvester

Hi my name is Molly.  I have been part of the Crossways team since September 2017.  It has always been a passion of mine to work with animals and I was over the moon when I was accepted into the Crossways family.  Recently me and my family moved and we now live in the house on Crossways Farm where we run the kennel, cattery and hydrotherapy centre.

I have 2 cheeky cocker spaniels, a chunky lab, a fat cat and a gorgeous collie cross retriever!  My days are spent busy down in the kennels and cattery.  I’m also a level 3 certificate Hydrotherapist.  I love my job, all the doggies are always so happy to see everyone. I enjoy opportunities to learn more about them and I find the hydrotherapy very rewarding.

Lauren Holmes

Hello, I’m Lauren and I originally started working at Crossways in October 2015, but I left to do voluntary youth work in Lewisham.  I came back to work at Crossways in October 2018 and have since done my level 3 Hydrotherapy course. I spend my day in the kennels, cattery and Hydrotherapy pool.

I always had my heart set on having a Rhodesian Ridgeback but in March 2017 I rescued a Parson’s Russell cross breed named Rafferty, he is my first ever dog and a challenge, but he has become my best companion.  I also have a cat called Pepper who lives at my mum’s house as him and the dog aren’t great friends.  I spend most of my time with my dog exploring new walks.

Sarah Ford

Hello, I’m Sarah and I joined the Crossways team on 8th of September 2006. At first I was helping out on weekends and days off but before long I was asked if I would like to join the team full time, and of course I jumped at the chance of working with all of our clients fur babies!

A few years passed and I really enjoyed the grooming side of things (and the kennels of course) so I have now been grooming since 2012 and love making our client’s dogs look beautiful.

I currently own a Rottweiler called Xena, we took her on at 8 months old; a Patterdale called Jack, we got when he was 6 months old; and last but not least we have a Pomeranian called Dennis, we got him when he was 6 years old.  We had three dogs before these and they all lived to a good age (I do still miss them all).

Helen Bellingham-Curtis

Hi, my name is Helen.  I’ve been at Crossways for 25 years and these days I can usually be found grooming dogs!  I also do general kennel work and my Saturday rotation in the Hydrotherapy Centre.  I enjoy the variety it offers and take great pride and pleasure in my work.

I have 3 dogs of my own; the baby..Ted; the clown..Orla and the boss..Larch.  I grew up with dogs and a menagerie of other animals, so naturally my first job was in kennels when I was 13.  I then worked in a local pet shop before starting here full-time aged 19!

Being around animals has always been my life.  I couldn’t imagine working anywhere else, Crossways is an extended family which is what makes it such a happy environment for our boarders and day visitors alike!

Michelle Mchugh

Hi, I’m Michelle and I am the newest member of the Crossways team.  I started in May 2019 and you will generally find me in the Crossways reception either chatting to owners, on the phone or running mini marathons to the kennels and back.  I spend a lot of my time greeting all our customer’s adorable pets when they arrive and seeing the excitement and joy of them reuniting with their families after their stay with us.

Crossways is a dream place to work as it’s not every day you get to cuddle dogs and fuss cats, as well as work with amazing people.

I have 2 of my own fur babies. Buddy my Rough Collie who hates getting up in the mornings, and Angel my Ragdoll cat who even though she is 14 years old still looks like a kitten.

What our customers say

Amazing, knowledgeable caring staff treatment keeps me fit and mobile.
It’s my fave place to visit!

FAQs

What star rating are you for animal welfare?

We have been awarded a 5 star rating for the Animal Welfare Act by Mole Valley District Council.

This means we are part of an exclusive club of Kennels in the UK that are classed as “Outstanding” – something we are really proud of.

Do you board animals that require medication?

All our staff are accustomed to dealing with animals in need to that extra care.

We have a long history of boarding cats and dogs that need medication. We ask that all medication is in its original packaging and we have clear instructions on the dose and the times of day it needs to be administered.

It is important that we keep to the same regimes as you would at home, so please make sure we have been made fully aware of what you do.

Do you supply food and can I bring in my own?

We do supply a range of wet and dry foods.

If your pet is on a specific diet whether its weight loss, prescription or if your animal prefers raw food, then you are able to bring in your own. We request that it is clearly labelled and accompanied by instructions on quantity and how many times you would like them fed a day.

Do you have a fridge or freezer to store fresh food?

Both the Kennels and Cattery have a fridge freezer to store any foods or medication.

Do you supply bedding?

We have a range of day and night bedding, including fleeces, duvets and blankets. These are regularly checked and cleaned.

Can we bring our own treats?

You are welcome to bring your pet’s own treats, indeed we recommend it when animals have allergies.

Can we supply our own bedding and toys?

Please feel free to bring any bedding or toys that will make your pet feel more at home.

What are your opening hours?

Our reception opening hours are:
Monday to Saturday, 10am – 12pm and 2pm – 4pm.
On Sundays we are open 10am – 12pm.

Is it possible to drop off or pick up outside of normal opening hours?

We do not offer this service.

Should all vaccinations be up to date?

All vaccinations must be up to date at the time of boarding.

We don’t require the kennel cough vaccine but if you opt for your dog to have this it has to be at least 2 weeks before your pet comes to stay.

How many times a day do you feed?

We follow your routine at home of how many times you like to feed your pet, eg. breakfast, lunch, dinner or any combination of these.

How often are the Kennels cleaned?

The kennels and their runs are thoroughly cleaned every morning, and any time in the day as when it needs it. The kennels are also inspected throughout the day for any toilet mess.

Do the dogs get exercised?

Our aim is to get your dog away from its kennel twice a day. We have a supervised, secure play area where it can run off the lead, play and sniff.

If they require an additional walking they are always kept on a long line and are walked in our beautiful private gardens.

Are dogs from different households mixed together?

We do not mix dogs from different households.

Are the Kennels heated and ventilated?

The kennels are centrally heated and we have fans and ventilation doors for the summer.

Are you a member of a trade association?

We are members of the CHA – Canine Hydrotherapy Association

How do I get referred for treatment?

You can contact us, and we then will send a consent form to your vet and/or specialist.

As soon as they have returned it to us we will be touch with you to proceed with treatment.

Is the pool heated?

The pool’s temperature is set to 30-31°C.

Can I watch my dog during their treatment, whether it is a swim or a water treadmill session?

Yes, we encourage you to watch your dog in the pool and treadmill as we like you to encourage them and it helps to settle their nerves.

Can I get in the pool with my dog?

Sadly, you are unable to get in the pool with your pet.

As hydrotherapy is a medical treatment we need to keep your dog calm and unfortunately due to the CHA regulations this is not allowed.

How many dogs can swim at the same time?

In the interests of safety and in accordance with CHA regulations we only swim one dog at one time.

What are the opening hours of the hydrotherapy centre?

We offer appointments Monday to Friday 10am – 12pm and 2pm – 4pm and on Saturday mornings 8.30am – 11am.

How many sessions will my dog need?

As every case / condition is different, our hydrotherapists can advise you during the course of the treatment.

How often do I need to bring my dog for hydrotherapy sessions?

Again, this is different for each individual case and your hydrotherapists will advise you when examining your pet.

Do I need to bring anything?

You may need a towel for your car; we do our best to dry your dog off after a swim, but they still may be damp.

Also, some of their favourite treats to encourage them to exercise whist having treatment.

Do you hand strip?

Yes, we do hand stripping.

Can I wait while my dog is being groomed?

Our grooming & pampering services are a time-consuming activity, so we ask you to drop off in the morning of your appointment and pick up in the afternoon.

Is it possible to watch the grooming session?

Unfortunately having owners watching does stress pets out so we strongly advise it against.

We like the grooming room to be as quiet and as relaxed as possible throughout their pamper.

Can cats be groomed?

Yes, we can groom cats.
