Cattery
Here at Crossways, we’re most definitely cat people.
Dog people, too. But most definitely, we love cats as much as you do. While you’re away on holiday, or for work, perhaps you’d prefer not to ask your neighbour or friend to feed your cat. It’s a hassle, and to be fair, cats do enjoy company; like most of us, they experience loneliness, too.
We’re here to remove your cat concerns.
Crossways provides a safe, warm, secure and enclosed environment for individual cats. Or, for cats from the same family who are familiar with each other. In other words, your beloved puss will be secure. Safely gathered in, with no opportunity to get lost – or worse, come to harm in the great beyond.

Facilities and On-Boarding
We’re here to look after your cat in the same way that you would do; with lots of love, attention and an in-depth understanding of the unique quirkiness and sometimes eccentric things that cats sometimes do.
Talk to us about their:
- Food, and whether they need any special diets
- Medication, if relevant
- Toilet routines
- Personalities and traits
This in-depth questionnaire, before you go away, helps us to cater carefully and precisely to your cat, enabling you to switch off, down tools, kick back and relax on holiday – with complete trust in the skills and experience of the staff looking after him or her.
Our staff are not only highly qualified and trained, there’s a high staff-to-cat ratio for some extra special attention, playing and stroking. Equally, there are scratching posts, and places for them to squeeze themselves into – should they so desire. Also, our guests have comfortable beds with fleeces and litter trays.
However, you’re welcome to bring along some familiar items or toys, and food if you think that your pet will find it comforting.

Nutrition and Care
We stock high-quality range of cat food, and will ensure that plenty of fresh water is left out for them to drink.
Daily, our team will make full physical checks, and should we spot something amiss that needs prompt attention, will book an appointment with your vet, let you know the complete picture, and keep you up to speed.
We also have a working partnership with locally based Priory Vets.
Does your cat need regular medication? No problem at all, we’re happy to cater to this, with meds for diabetes, epilepsy, and so on. Should medication be required, this can be given by a member of our non-veterinary qualified team.

Vaccinations & medication
We’re completely devoted to the health and welfare of all the animals in our care.
Therefore, before you bring your cat to us, please ensure that he or she is fully vaccinated and that you can produce a current vaccination certificate.
Vaccinations save lives, and their importance is key. Do talk to us with any questions you may have. You may be surprised; a single vaccination is not enough, and you will need to have your cat protected in this way regularly.

FAQs
What star rating are you for animal welfare?
We have been awarded a 5 star rating for the Animal Welfare Act by Mole Valley District Council.
This means we are part of an exclusive club of Kennels in the UK that are classed as “Outstanding” – something we are really proud of.
Do you board animals that require medication?
All our staff are accustomed to dealing with animals in need to that extra care.
We have a long history of boarding cats and dogs that need medication. We ask that all medication is in its original packaging and we have clear instructions on the dose and the times of day it needs to be administered.
It is important that we keep to the same regimes as you would at home, so please make sure we have been made fully aware of what you do.
Do you supply food and can I bring in my own?
We do supply a range of wet and dry foods.
If your pet is on a specific diet whether its weight loss, prescription or if your animal prefers raw food, then you are able to bring in your own. We request that it is clearly labelled and accompanied by instructions on quantity and how many times you would like them fed a day.
Do you have a fridge or freezer to store fresh food?
Both the Kennels and Cattery have a fridge freezer to store any foods or medication.
Do you supply bedding?
We have a range of day and night bedding, including fleeces, duvets and blankets. These are regularly checked and cleaned.
Can we bring our own treats?
You are welcome to bring your pet’s own treats, indeed we recommend it when animals have allergies.
Can we supply our own bedding and toys?
Please feel free to bring any bedding or toys that will make your pet feel more at home.
What are your opening hours?
Our reception opening hours are:
Monday to Saturday, 10am – 12pm and 2pm – 4pm.
On Sundays we are open 10am – 12pm.
Is it possible to drop off or pick up outside of normal opening hours?
We do not offer this service.
Should all vaccinations be up to date?
All vaccinations must be up to date at the time of boarding.
We don’t require the kennel cough vaccine but if you opt for your dog to have this it has to be at least 2 weeks before your pet comes to stay.
How many times a day do you feed?
We follow your routine at home of how many times you like to feed your pet, eg. breakfast, lunch, dinner or any combination of these.
How often are the Kennels cleaned?
The kennels and their runs are thoroughly cleaned every morning, and any time in the day as when it needs it. The kennels are also inspected throughout the day for any toilet mess.
Do the dogs get exercised?
Our aim is to get your dog away from its kennel twice a day. We have a supervised, secure play area where it can run off the lead, play and sniff.
If they require an additional walking they are always kept on a long line and are walked in our beautiful private gardens.
Are dogs from different households mixed together?
We do not mix dogs from different households.
Are the Kennels heated and ventilated?
The kennels are centrally heated and we have fans and ventilation doors for the summer.
Are you a member of a trade association?
We are members of the CHA – Canine Hydrotherapy Association
How do I get referred for treatment?
You can contact us, and we then will send a consent form to your vet and/or specialist.
As soon as they have returned it to us we will be touch with you to proceed with treatment.
Is the pool heated?
The pool’s temperature is set to 30-31°C.
Can I watch my dog during their treatment, whether it is a swim or a water treadmill session?
Yes, we encourage you to watch your dog in the pool and treadmill as we like you to encourage them and it helps to settle their nerves.
Can I get in the pool with my dog?
Sadly, you are unable to get in the pool with your pet.
As hydrotherapy is a medical treatment we need to keep your dog calm and unfortunately due to the CHA regulations this is not allowed.
How many dogs can swim at the same time?
In the interests of safety and in accordance with CHA regulations we only swim one dog at one time.
What are the opening hours of the hydrotherapy centre?
We offer appointments Monday to Friday 10am – 12pm and 2pm – 4pm and on Saturday mornings 8.30am – 11am.
How many sessions will my dog need?
As every case / condition is different, our hydrotherapists can advise you during the course of the treatment.
How often do I need to bring my dog for hydrotherapy sessions?
Again, this is different for each individual case and your hydrotherapists will advise you when examining your pet.
Do I need to bring anything?
You may need a towel for your car; we do our best to dry your dog off after a swim, but they still may be damp.
Also, some of their favourite treats to encourage them to exercise whist having treatment.
Do you hand strip?
Yes, we do hand stripping.
Can I wait while my dog is being groomed?
Our grooming & pampering services are a time-consuming activity, so we ask you to drop off in the morning of your appointment and pick up in the afternoon.
Is it possible to watch the grooming session?
Unfortunately having owners watching does stress pets out so we strongly advise it against.
We like the grooming room to be as quiet and as relaxed as possible throughout their pamper.
Can cats be groomed?
Yes, we can groom cats.
Hydrotherapy
Your dog deserves a long, healthy and happy life.
As a business that cares deeply about the health and wellbeing of your much-loved furry friend, we have a highly qualified team of hydrotherapists who are dedicated to improving your pet’s quality of life.
Since we started to offer it, we’ve championed hydrotherapy as one of THE most effective and powerful ways to rehabilitate any injuries your dog may have sustained, to relieve muscle or joint pain, or to help him or her manage a range of movement or health-related issues.
Good to Know
- Crossways is accredited and registered with the Canine Hydrotherapy Association, the body that sets and maintains gold standard in benchmarks, requirements and ethics within this important area of animal welfare. We adhere fully to their Code of Conduct, and endorse their drive for the understanding and advancement of good practice among members.
- Our professional hydrotherapists each hold recognised qualifications from the CHA, and undertake rigorous additional training and learning evert year. They are professionals working at the highest level, and we are extremely proud of what they can, and have achieved.
- Not only does this offer you the peace of mind you deserve, but also the reassurance of knowing that through this authentic and fully legitimate accreditation, you will be able to claim for the costs of hydrotherapy treatment through any pet insurance you may have.
Did you know…
We’re delighted and proud to have been an extremely early adopter of hydrotherapy for dogs. Crossways was the very first animal kennels in the UK to install a Derwent pool – that is, the ORIGINAL hydrotherapy pool of its type in the entire country.
Not only do we have one of the largest pools in the area – if not the largest.
We ALSO have a treadmill.
What Is Hydrotherapy for Dogs?
Simply explained, hydrotherapy uses the natural elements of water to provide a safe, comfortable and impact-free programme of treatment for your dog. It’s an outstanding complementary therapy, and our team works closely with both vets and physiotherapists.
Water has highly beneficial properties.
The molecules in water are tightly packed together, making it harder for our bodies to move through it than air. In this way, hydrotherapy for your dog uses resistance, buoyancy, viscosity and something called hydrostatic pressure to help your dog rehabilitate.
Yet, water is non-weight-bearing.
As this type of physical therapy is weightless, with no gravity, the water’s buoyancy reduces the stress on their joints. Plus, as the limb breaks through the surface of the water, the cohesion of the water molecules requires extra effort than simply moving underwater. If we add turbulence, this also adds to the exertion required
And, it’s all extremely effective and in effect custom-designed. – for both the canine super-elite, as well as for those who aren’t quite as youthful and energetic as they used to be.
The Treadmill – How it Works
Crossways has a state-of-the-art treadmill, which gives our therapists control over the treatment plan for your dog. As mentioned, it’s totally bespoke. For example, they can change the water levels, include inclines and declines to suit the patients’ needs, and amend the speed.
What Can Hydrotherapy Do?
In short, it can do a great deal, offering you the peace of mind to know that you can show your dog the same kind of love that he or she feels for you.
It offers powerful, yet gentle methods of rehabilitation, and is a vital part of your pet’s journey towards full health after an operation. Equally, hydrotherapy offers pre-surgery benefits, and can be a way to manage your pets conservatively.
Our fully qualified hydrotherapy team has the in-depth skills and experience that you as a pet owner need. Why? Because you can put your complete faith and trust in the fact that not only do they adore dogs, their extensive qualifications and experience enable them to know how best to treat your pet.

The Crossways Pool…
…is BIG (measurement?)…in fact, one of the largest in the country. The water is heated to a maximum of 31 degree Celsius, and it’s run by a 24/7 pump filtration system. The pool has an integral ramp and resting platforms, along with two directional jets, offering three levels of intensity.
It’s air-conditioned, too.
At all times, your dog will be cared for one-to-one by a Crossways therapist, targeting specific areas, such as limbs, shoulders or chest muscles.
The Crossways Treadmill…
…is ideal for dogs with joint issues or arthritis. It’s a wonderful way to enable rehabilitation to take place in a safe and controlled environment, with high success rates.
As the treadmill starts to move slowly, so will your dog. The water provides enough resistance to strengthen their muscles without the stress of gravity.

Physiotherapy
We also host regular clinics, courtesy of our associate independent physiotherapist, Joanne Boddy. As you can imagine, working with Joanne means that we can extend our range of treatments even more, thus improving recovery rates and general fitness.
What Else Do I Need to Know?
Whilst these treatments may appear clinical, and indeed they are, just one look at the goings-on in our hydrotherapy pool speaks volumes about the love and care between our specialists and the animals in their care.
Orthopaedic surgery for dogs never used to exist. Dogs’ lives were, sadly, cut short.
Now, with the amazing leaps and bounds in veterinary medicine, and the wonderful benefits of hydrotherapy for rehabilitation, Crossways is so pleased to be a part of the wellbeing revolution.
We have numerous skills and resources on-hand to focus on the needs of your dog.
Now, you and your beloved family member can look forward to many more years of happiness. Together, as you deserve to be.

What our customers say
Amazing, knowledgeable caring staff ….
Amazing, knowledgeable caring staff treatment keeps me fit and mobile.
It’s my fave place to visit!
Teddy
Teddy has been going swimming at crossways kennels to loose weight. The staff have been excellent. They inform me after every session on how he has done as I can’t go in due to Covid 19 rules. Teddy loves going, he goes straight in with the lady on reception. What I love most is the pictures of him in the pool I receive that evening via email. Fantastic service. Highly recommended.
Alfie
We have been using Crossways since 2011, for both our rescue spaniels. Our first dog used the hydrotherapy pool for his arthritis which was very beneficial and he also came to stay. We very happily continued to use Crossways when we got Alfie, our energetic spaniel. He comes in regularly for fun swims, grooming and to stay. He loves the girls and is always pleased to see them.

Matted Coats
This is really important. Sometimes a dog’s coat becomes so matted it cannot be bushed out. Although we have lots of specialist equipment and experience in dealing with this, if you find it impossible to get the mats out, we will only be slightly more successful.
In these cases we will try to de-mat small areas of coat, however should this cause signs of distress or suffering we are obliged to shave them down in accordance with the animal welfare act of 2006, clause 5. Your pet’s wellbeing is at the forefront of our thoughts and often a shave is a much better solution than a lengthy and painful de-matting session.
This can sometimes cause skin irritation which if it persists should be treated in accordance with your vet’s advice.
By paying for a groom you are agreeing that Crossways Kennels owners and our staff will not be held liable for any post grooming effects of clipping a matted or neglected coat.
What our customers say
I couldn’t be happier…
I couldn’t be happier.
Will was clearly well cared for and has even come back smelling amazing!
Grooming for Bernese Mountain Dogs
I have been bringing our Bernese Mountain dogs for their regular wash, brush, trim and blow dry for many years now and I am always really please with the results. It is great to have them clean and smelling lovely though I must admit that they don’t stay like it for very long! They are always happy to go in and I hope that they really enjoy their trip to the hairdresser’s.
Mrs Adams
Mrs Kenton
Our 2 Springer Spaniels came to you for a groom – all we can say is fantastic – Helen and Sarah did just what we asked for and we couldn’t be more pleased. Thank you.
